DRIFT is an exploration of sound art and experimental music featuring radio broadcasts, moving image, publications, and live events. DRIFT provides a platform for artists from Scotland and beyond. An increasing number of artists, producers, DJ's and sonic creators, from a broad spectrum of disciplines and varying modes of practice, are exploring streaming media as a viable format. We want to open up this channel further.
DRIFT is a New Media Scotland project in collaboration with freelance curators, artists and writers. The first manifestation of DRIFT was an audio art and experimental music event at venues across Glasgow in November 1999, curated by Robert H. King. For three days, New Media Scotland presented an imaginative and accessible programme of sound art and acoustic ecology focused events. Venues involved ranged from the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) to the then newly-opened Lighthouse, Scotland's national centre for Architecture & Design. A catalogue/programme featuring theoretical and contextual texts on acoustic ecology and sound art was produced along with a DRIFT companion CD of audio works from featured artists.
New Media Scotland continued to work closely with curator Robert H. King and together began making and implementing plans for a dedicated sound art site. Since 2004 New Media Scotland has worked in collaboration to present works on the Drift site. Web are continuing to upgrade our streaming capabilities. In the meantime you can listen to our latest works - The Radio Art Commissions, featuring works by Zoë Irvine and Mark Vernon.
