Moon

Inspace, 1 Crichton Street, Edinburgh EH8 9AB
Friday 25th June 2010, 8.30 for 9pm.

It's the near future, and astronaut Sam Bell is living on the far side of the moon. He's completing a three-year contract with Lunar Industries to mine for Earth’s new primary source of clean energy, Helium-3.

It's a solitary job, made harder by a broken satellite that allows no live communications home. Taped messages are all he can send and receive. The only real-time interaction is with GERTY, the station's robotic computer. He yearns to go home, but an accident uncovers a startling truth.

Sunday 27th June 2010, 8.30 for 9pm.

Jacques Tati returns as the bumbling yet lovable hero Monsieur Hulot running amok in the ultramodern home of his sister, and later his brother-in-law's plastic hose factory. A delightful satire of postwar France's obsession with mechanized living, modern architecture and rampant US-style consumerism. Pitfalls and pratfalls ensue, and nothing goes to plan.

Jacob Kirkegaard will make his Scottish debut with Sabulation, an audio-visual work based on the so-called 'singing sands' in the deserts of Oman. Matt Rogalsky's performance will activate different spaces in the room using sounds recorded live from inside and outside the building. uncanny valley

Inspace, 1 Crichton Street, Edinburgh EH8 9AB
16th April 2010, 6.30pm.

When is a smile not a smile? Things that are nearly – but not quite – like us, are somehow “uncanny”. There’s been a lot of progress recently in giving robots human-like heads and faces and humanoid bodies. But as soon they raise an eyebrow or try to crack a smile, we can tell they aren’t the real thing.

Professor Dave Perrett and Dr Sethu Vijayakumar explore what lies behind our fantastic skill at reading other people’s faces and imitating human motion. Whatever it is, it makes the roboticist’s job that much harder.
