Our sixth Dialogues concert features the remarkable Jerome Noetinger performing two solo sets of his extraordinarily powerful and distinctive live electronics.

He is an improviser and composer of electroacoustic music based in Grenoble, France. He runs the record label and distributor Metamkine and writes for the French magazine Revue Et Corrigee.

Dialogues | freshly prepared

A showcase of new groups that came together in 2009. Owen Green, Lauren Hayes, Jules Rawlinson and Sean Williams estabilshed a collective to perform semi composed / improvised works for electronic systems. Their ensemble is made from pairs of microphone-driven laptops and analogue synths.

Seattle-born trumpeter Matt Postle and Polish musican Radek Rudniki got together in York last year and will give a performance that in their words "shows interaction between trumpet and live electronics and illustrates how limited material can evolve and entertain".

Dialogues | Scratch

In response to the work in our exhibition 'Are We Human?', the fourth Dialogues concert features performers from Edinburgh's free improvisation scene joined by Bennett Hogg on 'resistant violin' and John Ferguson on guitar.

We are also delighted to be showing Sean Williams' new sound piece (the sound of music), a work that explores the listening-history encoded into the grooves of long playing records.

Dialogues | Lukas Ligeti

Transcending genres, composer-percussionist Lukas Ligeti has developed a musical style drawing on Downtown New York experimentalism, contemporary classical music, jazz, electronica, and world music, particularly from Africa.

He will perform a selection of his compositions for electronics which reveal an inspiring new take on the dialogue between African and Western music achieved through ingenious use of sampling and music technology.

Lukas will also lead a three day workshop at Inspace with a second concert by students on the MScs in Digital Composition and Performance and Sound Design course. They will perform on the 20th November at 9pm.

Dialogues | Piano Plus

A concert featuring Sebastian Lexer (piano+) with Seymour Wright (sax) plus the Grew Brothers (Stephen Grew -piano and Nicholas Grew -electronics). Also presenting Lauren Hayes' new project for augmented prepared piano and a chance to catch Edinburgh's free improvisation trio lapslap.

Dialogues | Icarus

Following their performance at the 2007 Dialogues Festival, Icarus return to Edinburgh to help the festival celebrate its 10th anniversary and its new residency at Inspace. The live set will be accompanied by a specially commissioned film by Martin Hampton. Support will come from a new Edinburgh-based a junk yard electronics collaboration between Euan Currie, Grant Smith, Nick Styles, Lin Zhang. This will be the first chance to test out the acoustics and layout of Inspace.

Dialogues | Mike Svoboda

Mike Svoboda

This concert follows a three day workshop with trombonist and composer Mike Svoboda, where participants focused all their musical input and output in the context of three major contemporary works for solo trombone.

Works by Lucian Berio, Helmut Lachenmann, and Giacinto Scelsi served as a launch-pad, sounding board and spring for the participants. The musicians will reference their creativity and channel it into structured improvisations.

Xth Sense

For our second night of Dialogues musical experimentation we welcome three sets from Sound lab Edinburgh - Marco Donnarumma's Xth Sense, Intuitive Music and Hakemira plus a performative installation for game controllers.

The Xth Sense is a new and original, biophysical interactive system based on free, open source tools. Georgia Tech recently awarded the technology the prize of “world’s most innovative new musical instrument”.

In October 2009, Grew & Grew gave a fantastically energetic set at Inspace. We liked them so much that we've invited them back to perform and deliver a workshop.
